Narrative
WEXFORD COUNTY, MI – A commercial vehicle failed to slow down in time Tuesday afternoon, May 21, causing a multi-vehicle crash near Cadillac that left a 15-year-old critically injured and two other people seriously hurt.
Deputies with the Wexford County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene on northbound U.S. Highway 131 just past Old N US-131, at about 3:19 p.m.
A preliminary investigation found that a 53-year-old Lake City man was driving a commercial vehicle when he neglected to reduce speed while approaching slowed traffic ahead. As a result, the vehicle struck the back of an SUV, continued further down the road, and then collided with another vehicle.
The driver of the SUV, a 40-year-old Mesick woman, and one of her passengers, a 17-year-old boy, were transported to Traverse City Munson Hospital for serious injuries. Her other passenger, a 15-year-old boy who suffered life-threatening injuries, was rushed to Cadillac Munson before being airlifted to a Grand Rapids hospital.
While no one in the other victim vehicle was reported hurt, the driver of the commercial vehicle sustained minor injuries.
Multiple area agencies assisted at the scene, where a span of N US-131 was blocked for four hours to accommodate an initial investigation.
